I would love to be buried in sock yarn. Hm. Maybe I can somehow incorporate that into my will. For those not in the know, Stephanie has graciously linked to my site, helping to generate some interest in my request for left over sock yarn. On reading her comments and thinking it through just a little bit more, I better clarify a couple of points.
Firstly, please don’t go out and buy sock yarn for me. I mean, not unless you’re really rich and have a store near you that sells Fleece Artist.
What I am honestly, truthfully looking for are the bits you DIDN’t use after making your own pair of socks and don’t feel a desire to use them up yourself. Someone posted a comment over on Stephanie’s blog about having knit one sock and can she send me the rest of the yarn so she doesn’t have to knit the second sock. I suppose if you really have no intention of ever knitting the other sock and it would be a relief to you to have it out of your stash, then that fits within the intent of this project and I say go ahead. I hope that clears things up a wee bit.
Secondly, although I may not have expressed myself fully in my original posting, I DO intend to write this pattern up and post it freely on my site, although it’s so simple and easy one can barely even call it a pattern. Any beginning knitter can do this project. If they can find the required sock leftovers, that is.
Which leads me to point number three. I am currently using only wool/nylon blend fingering weight sock yarn bits in my blanket. I really want to do a second blanket with the cotton/wool/nylon blends when this one is finished, though. In my stash, I also have some wool/nylon in the sport weight and some lovely merino like Koigu and Cherry Tree Hill and some other more luxurious bits and pieces like Mountain Colors. What I think would be really cool is if people sent me what they have, mindless of which variety it is. Then, I can make some blankie kits to be sent out to others who are interested in the project. “Some” being defined by how much extra yarn I receive.
Okay, and that gets me around to the real point number three. If you are hot to make a sock-leftover blanket of your own, send me an e-mail – same address – shellyk at shellykang dot com – and I’ll put you on the list of people interested. I’ll have to figure out some way to be fair about giving the stuff away. Maybe we can have a contest on who wants it the most or has already started their blankie or maybe we can do some kind of donate-to-charity raffle or something. Suggestions welcome in the comments.
Finally, I offered to pay shipping for anyone who sends me yarn. I am a stay-at-home mom, so my financial resources are somewhat limited. But I’m serious about reimbursing anyone who wants to get rid of their yarn but doesn’t want to pay the shipping. Paypal would really work best. If you don’t do Paypal, we’ll have to work out some other kind of deal. I’m not sure if I’m comfortable sending personal checks to foriegn countries, but maybe we can work something out in trade or – well, we’ll figure it out.
Thanks so much for everyone who’s reading and considering sending me your yarn! I came home from a morning out at the park with the girls and was shocked to find my in-box full of e-mails. I’m working as I can to e-mail everyone individually in response, but it will probably have to wait for most till they’re in bed tonight. Trying to type at the computer with a toddler literally climbing my back and an infant on my back is nearly impossible.
Whoopee!
Oh girl, you are in for some real fun now, some kind of fairy tale, ‘yarn falling from the sky’ type dream come true.Truly, from the good graces of “Our Blessed Harlot”,(not to worry, I’m a heathen also) in putting out the ‘word’. Sorry I don’t have any scraps to send (I use mine up with crazy colour work socks) but I am loving the blankie, and looking forward to reading what it is you are doing. Good luck, beautiful family BTW, have fun!!
Wow, you are so lucky! The Harlot has acknowledged the existance of your blog. I wish she’d ‘notice’ mine… Although I do know that she knows I exsist. Hehehehe. I sent her a present.
Anyway, I’ll send you some leftovers. I don’t know if they’ll be enough for a square, but we’ll see.
I’m at barbarella AT utahis dot com
I came here last night you had only 1 comment – today I return Laughing because I so knew what you were in for *lol*
I made the mistake of advertising on shop windows for any knitting needles, yarn, books, etc that people didnt want or were selling cheap ” as there was a crazy new knitter in the family” aka Me.
And now with all the stuff I got given, I could probably open up my own knitting store !!!
Don’t forget about the sock swatch blankee.
If you are interested in sewing, I’d be more than happy to send you my sock swatches to stick in your blanket.
I like your idea of some kind of charity thing for the leftovers. Maybe someone will volunteer to knit a blankie for an auction for Knitters Without Borders or some other knit-friendly charity… I’m like you in your magic yarn ball post: afraid I’d not get the thing done by the deadline (but I don’t have the distraction of cute toddlers. I have teenagers. They may be tough, but it’s easier to squeeze in a few precious minutes of “me” time.)
Congrats – What an enjoyable blog!!! Have been bored rigid at work today so decided to plough through most of your archives. I like you…and look forward to watching your kids grow up!!
