Feed My Obsession
It's official. I'm really, truly obsessed with this modular sock-yarn blankie that I've started. I just can't seem to leave it alone. Any free moment when both girls are sleeping or otherwise occupied, there I am adding another square to the darn thing. Nevermind that meals need to be made, cleaning needs to be done, or that other knitting projects have higher priority on the to-do list. It's just so much fun to pick out which yarn to use next, it doesn't take very long to finish a block, and it is almost impossible to *not* go ahead and pick up stitches for the next one immediately.
Here's a current picture:

Harry cat seems to have discovered an affinity for the camera, or at least for hanging around near the blankie. Sometimes even on it.

I'll admit, it's not all that much to look at yet, but I can see the potential. It's going to be all crazy-quilt folk-art cool. Some day when I've knit up about a jillion squares. I haven't even gotten it as wide as I want it to be yet - I want a nice, generous couch size that you could curl up in with a kid or two on a cold winter night.
There's just one little problem. See that not-very-big basket right there next to Harry? That's all the yarn I have for this project so far. I've already used each yarn at least twice, and it is crystal-clear that I need more. Lots more. Here I was, thinking I was being SO good, using up stash yarn and clearing out the closet. Turns out, I'm going to have to beg anyone and everyone I can think of to donate their scraps to my cause. Starting right now. If you're reading this and you have left over sock yarn that you don't think you're going to use any time soon, would you pretty-please consider giving it to me? What I really want is the wool/nylon fingering weight variety, although if you have other sock yarns in either the wool/cotton/nylon blend or the all-merino types in either fingering or sport weight, I'd take those too.
There have got to be some other knitters out there in cyberspace wondering what to do with these little scraps. Some of them would probably be relieved to ship it off to a nice knitter who has a project in progress and will use it up right away. I'm offering a guilt-free disposal service! I'd even be willing to pay reasonable amounts of shipping costs to those interested in sending some my way. Depending on how many responses I get and how much yarn shows up at my house, maybe I can even share some of the love with some other lucky knitter who wants to make a blankie of their own.
So. If you are interested, please e-mail me at shellyk at shellykang dot com. I'll respond with my physical address and you can let me know what you have and how much shipping costs look to be. I could either paypal you or work out some other arrangement. I promise to thank you publicly right here on the blog, and you'll have the satisfaction of seeing your yarn added into the work as it grows into a real, useable blanket. As a public service, I'll also write more about how to make your own modular blankie just like mine. It's so easy, it's silly.
Now for some fun family pics. I finally got tired of brushing Sophie's hair out of her eyes and did something about it today. Here she is wearing her first little bitty pony tail.

On Sunday, Joe put his swim trunks on and hopped in the wading pool with Julie. Here they are sharing an inner tube, and she's busy "washing" him.

Oh, darn! I found your blog a month too late. Last month I finally admitted that I would not use all those little remains of sock yarn, and I gave it away.
Would have gladly sent to you. Nice blog.. I'm enjoying reading it.
When I finally finish the next pair, I'll be sure to send you some. Love the blanket idea - it's going to be amazing. You better watch out - you're going to be swamped with sock yarn. Trust me.
Oh girlie are you in trouble. I've emailed you, but I have a feeling your in-box is going to be mighty full.
Drop me a line and I'll send you a bit of sock yarn- postage is on me.
stingdragon AT gmail DOT com
i just sent you an email where i described the sockie bits as shnibbles, what we call them here in MN. then, i notice, you're a MN resident too! i'm much, much further north - almost in Grand Forks, ND. happy knitting!
Hello fellow housewife.
I just read your post requesting scrap sock yarn. I am going to be knitting 5 pairs of socks this summer hopefully more for the summer of socks knitalong. If you send me your email addr with your snail mail addr--I can send you what I have when I am done. Also, if you are intersted in hitting up more sock knitters you can post at the Summer of socks blog site and request there too:

Shelly! that is such a great idea for a blanket! but do you realize what you've done? and do you realize that the Yarn Harlot has mentioned you on her blog?! :o)
anyway, i'll send you an email re:my sock yarn leftovers. it's this great stuff from tessyarns in Maine that i got at StitchesWest in February. i also have some other fingering weight wool/nylon mix stuff so i'll make sure to tell you about it all--after i check my entire stash...
muahahaha! >:o)
That's an awesome idea, and I love the look of it so far. But you know you're in for it now... Stephanie P-M just posted this on Harlot, and you are soon to be drowning in yarn.
I unfortunately am only on my very first pair of socks....if I become prolific I'll send some to you. Please post how-tos. It looks like a great idea.
What a beautiful daughter you have! Where would you like the yarn sent?!
I love your blanket idea! That's a great plan. Wish I had some scraps to share but most of my sock yarn is sadly (for you) still in complete skeins...However, with the Yarn Harlot herself posting about you, you're sure to be inundated with yarn!
Send me your snail mail address. Have I got some sock yarn for you!
msesq at comcast dot net
I love that idea! What a creative person you are... Is it your own design?
Sorry, no stash of sock yarn, but I understand your obsession. I did the same thing with my crappy acrylic stash on an entrelac "sampler" that grew to be an afghan! BTW, your blanket looks great!
I'm with stingdragon... drop me a line and the postage is on me...jago_ji@hotmail.com...
oh the responses you shall get.
the yarn harlot has doomed your house to sock yarn!
:)
unfortunately i dont have sock yarn but i have leftovers of a fingering weight if you want that.
i will also email you.
OHMIGOSH! Sophie is absolutely adorable. I'm interested in the "how to" to make this blanket, what a great use for leftovers.
Good luck to you!
Shelly, I love the idea for the blanket. And I knit socks constantly and have a fair number of odds and ends left over from various pairs.
If you e-mail me at ellen AT knitsisters DOT com with your mailing address, I'll make you a little package and send it out to you.
Happy obsessive knitting!
My sock yarn dregs are in an envelope, awaiting your address... jhentz at gmail dot com... :)
I hope the Harlot's fans haven't overwhelmed your server - it took me a bunch of tries to get your blog to open. But it was worth it. What a great idea. And a gorgeous kid. Please send me your snail-mail addy & I'll send you some yarn. A favor in return? Will you post pictures of all the yarn you get? Can't wait to see this!
Are you excited that you were listed on the Yarnharlot website? I can only imagine what the pile of sock yarn left-overs are going to look like. Very cool idea and a great way to use up the extra sock yarn!!
I was excited to see that you're from Minnesota. I'll have to add your blog to my favorites!!
Betsy in Chaska :)
Hi, if you send me an email at awanda@gmail.com with your snail mail addy, I'll happy send you some of the leftovers I've got. No need to worry about postage.
Send your mailing address to sarah.brezavar@verizon.net and sock yarn (not too much) will be on its way....

Hi, I'm being selfish and keep my bits of leftover sock yarn after seeing your blankie! Gotta make one of those. How big did you decide to make the squares?
Well, DUH!!!! I'm also working on a left-over sock yarn afghan! I wish I'd thought of asking for other knitter's left-overs. If you get way more than you need, would you send some my way? I'd gladly pay postage. Pretty please?

awesome idea! i have a bunch of sock yarn leftovers, particularly because i have skinny feet. sadly for you, i think that i will 'steal' your idea rather than sending you my leftovers. feel free to let me know if you receive WAAAAAY too much yarn!
A great idea for using leftovers and it is a beautiful blanket as well. Sorry I can't donate, but I've made you a favorite. I want to see the deluge of yarn you receive!!!!
Oh, dear...I think you are going to be quite overwhelmed with sock yarn! I have some scraps and have some socks on the needles now so will continue collecting for you. No worries about postage. Send me your snail mail address! binns17 AT yahoo DOT com
I'm in, too! I have a WHOLE BALL of yarn I just never did like. It pooled up. I gave one ball to the cat but felt too guilty dooming TWO balls to him (his name is Big Head because..well, he has a really fiendishly BIG HEAD).
katiewenthur@hotmail.com
Dude, you are really in SO much trouble. I don't think you realise the scope of your request. Anyway, I'll email you for your address. I''m knitting socks for an entire Roller Derby team, I'll have plenty of left-overs. Get ready to be shoveling yarn drifts around your house.
I'm not a sock knitter, so I have no leftovers. I'm glad I found your blog though. It's great to find another Mpls knit blogger.
Hi: I'd be happy to share my yarn with you; I have an ebay store so I think I can "spare" some :))
Send me your snail mail address and I'll ship some out to you.
Great idea; hope you plan to share your pattern!!!!!
Linda

I probably wouldn't be offering, except that I want to see your house buried in yarn. That Yarn Harlot is a laugh-a-minute and she has some crazy ideas that actually work out. I will email you for your address.
Yup, I'm in for the burial! send address to ellenanthony a gmail. Go Heathens and Harlots !!!

Lovely Idea! The "crazy quilt" is great - I've always wanted to make a crazy quilt. Maybe a knitted one could actually happen! Will you keep me in mind for any leftovers?
Well, I can't BUT help a fellow knitter and minn-e-soo-tin out! ;)
If you send me your addy, I'll send you some yarn. :D

Want yarn?
jill -at- writingortyping -dot- com
I've got some socky leftovers that are exactly what you are looking for.
No sock yarn - sorry, I haven't finished my first pair yet - but I had to tell you that Sophie gives a whole new meaning to "Pretty in Pink"! She's a beautiful little girl..
HI ok you have peaked my curiousity when are you going to share this pattern...I have ww yarn that would be a perfect use for it for the new grandbaby coming into my life soon.
Please if you want email me the pattern.
Tonya
You are going to be buried in Yarn, Shelly. What more could a knitter ask for?

The link....my yarn stash for the link!
Shelley, great idea for that leftover sock yarn! Hate to admit it but I'm thinking I "need" to try one for myself!
Hoping you let us know how you're doing it??
Bet you're going to be bombarded with "leftovers"!!
Hey! I'm another fellow Minnesotan! woo hoo!! I'll gladly share, send me an snail addy and sock remnants will arrive at your destination soon. I'd love to have instructions for that blanket, it's gorgeous. You're daughter is really a cutie!!!!
Shayla in HOT HOT HOT West Central Minnesota
I've got sock yarn, and I'm just up north of you in Shoreview... I'm sending an email too.
So sorry,I wish I did have sock yarn, I'd love to contribute to this lovely blankie! Would this pattern work with other scrap yarns, as long as they're the same general weight.
Your girls are gorgeous!
Lucky you, all the responses you got! I use my leftover sock yarn to add to worstened weight yarn for CIC knitting - childrenincommon.org. So if you DO end up with more leftovers -- please consider donating them to someone who will use it for charity. Not that the blankie doesn't rock, mind you, because it does. Just sharing another thought!!
Boy, are you in for a deluge! I've got some lying around I can send off. Email me at lysa at mftweb dot com.
Lysa in Tornadoland (Sleepy Hollow)
can I have your pattern? I admit I'm being stingy.. but you have showed me a way to use up all my scraps!! I was just going to knit a long goofy scarf out of it all, but I like what you've done better, and I need to learn a new technique! I promise I won't solicit for scraps, honest!
PS> Love your Maine Coon!
This is too weird... I've got a similar "leftovers" project going, but my scraps are mostly in one color family. I'll gladly send you some of mine if you send me a snail mail address.
I sent an email to you--I have some to send, too! Postage on me.
What a wonderful idea , I would love to have the pattern, first grandchild expected and bags of double knitting wool stashed, lots of luck, ronnie
Golly, I have some Id like to get rid of...I'll email you for your address.
I recently started knitting socks toe-up, being frustrated by the leftovers. I saved it all(I'm Scottish) and wondered what I was ever going to do with it.Now, I know. E-mail me your address, postage on me. paulanrichards@mac.com
I hope you get enough yarn for that wonderful blankie. I, too, am dying for the pattern. Please, please, please!
I think I have some yarn to spare, if you'll email me your addy. Postage on the house!
Beautiful daughters, but I'm biased. I'm caucasian, my husband is Japanese-American, and we have a daughter who is pretty good looking, too. Mine's 21; it just gets better! (after the teen years, that is!)
oops!
mtpine at sonic dot net
I'd be happy to send you all of my ends! Let me know if you'd like them.
send me your addy and i'll get some yarn off to ya (don't worry about the postage) :D i'd just love to have the pattern to make one (someday).
email me: rebeccaATewedevilDOTcom
Hi,
A couple of pounds of sock yarn ends will be off to you on Monday. And after I packed the box and sealed it up I found some more, so will start collecting that too. You are getting Opal Tiger and Bumblebee ends - in fact you are getting a brief history of the last several years of Opal! Enjoy!
Katherine
upislandeggs.blog-city.com
Postage is on me; it's not that much, maybe a pound of yarn. Just send me your address & I'll look forward to photos of the finished product!
Cheers!
Oh, man... that's *so* cool! I'd send you my sock yarn leftovers, but now I really have an urge to make one myself. However, if you're interested, I'll send you half of each colour I have, and you could swap for a similar amount? Then we'd have even more variety in each of our blankes. :) Drop me an e-mail with your address if you're interested.

So how much yarn did you receive? Post a picture....
Dear Sherry, and anyone else coming back to this original post looking for new information, there have been blog posts just about every day since this one, all with more information on how much yarn I've received and how the blanket is doing. Please go to my main page at www.shellykang.com and you can read the current post, or check out the archives by clicking the links on the right.
well this is a great idea and of course i find it after im sure youve gotten gobs of yarn. it reminds me of a WIP in my quilt stash. I call it my quarter quilt coz none of the pieces are larger then a quarter and its beeeuutiful!
Please post and let us know how its going and how much yarn you received!
I know that this is an old post but i just wanted to tell you your blanket is beyond beautiful. I have only finished one pair of socks but I have a small ball left over, send me your email and I'll send it to you. Postage on me:) Would love to help. m_darcey@yahoo.com
What a great blanket! I would love to make one just like it. If you have leftovers from all you received and then don't know what to do with it...you can send it my way.
Congrats on getting mentioned on The Yarn Harlots blog! Wow, that's coooool!
