Feed My Obsession

It’s official. I’m really, truly obsessed with this modular sock-yarn blankie that I’ve started. I just can’t seem to leave it alone. Any free moment when both girls are sleeping or otherwise occupied, there I am adding another square to the darn thing. Nevermind that meals need to be made, cleaning needs to be done, or that other knitting projects have higher priority on the to-do list. It’s just so much fun to pick out which yarn to use next, it doesn’t take very long to finish a block, and it is almost impossible to *not* go ahead and pick up stitches for the next one immediately.

Here’s a current picture:

Harry cat seems to have discovered an affinity for the camera, or at least for hanging around near the blankie. Sometimes even on it.

I’ll admit, it’s not all that much to look at yet, but I can see the potential. It’s going to be all crazy-quilt folk-art cool. Some day when I’ve knit up about a jillion squares. I haven’t even gotten it as wide as I want it to be yet – I want a nice, generous couch size that you could curl up in with a kid or two on a cold winter night.

There’s just one little problem. See that not-very-big basket right there next to Harry? That’s all the yarn I have for this project so far. I’ve already used each yarn at least twice, and it is crystal-clear that I need more. Lots more. Here I was, thinking I was being SO good, using up stash yarn and clearing out the closet. Turns out, I’m going to have to beg anyone and everyone I can think of to donate their scraps to my cause. Starting right now. If you’re reading this and you have left over sock yarn that you don’t think you’re going to use any time soon, would you pretty-please consider giving it to me? What I really want is the wool/nylon fingering weight variety, although if you have other sock yarns in either the wool/cotton/nylon blend or the all-merino types in either fingering or sport weight, I’d take those too.

There have got to be some other knitters out there in cyberspace wondering what to do with these little scraps. Some of them would probably be relieved to ship it off to a nice knitter who has a project in progress and will use it up right away. I’m offering a guilt-free disposal service! I’d even be willing to pay reasonable amounts of shipping costs to those interested in sending some my way. Depending on how many responses I get and how much yarn shows up at my house, maybe I can even share some of the love with some other lucky knitter who wants to make a blankie of their own.

So. If you are interested, please e-mail me at shellyk at shellykang dot com. I’ll respond with my physical address and you can let me know what you have and how much shipping costs look to be. I could either paypal you or work out some other arrangement. I promise to thank you publicly right here on the blog, and you’ll have the satisfaction of seeing your yarn added into the work as it grows into a real, useable blanket. As a public service, I’ll also write more about how to make your own modular blankie just like mine. It’s so easy, it’s silly.

Now for some fun family pics. I finally got tired of brushing Sophie’s hair out of her eyes and did something about it today. Here she is wearing her first little bitty pony tail.

On Sunday, Joe put his swim trunks on and hopped in the wading pool with Julie. Here they are sharing an inner tube, and she’s busy “washing” him.

Oh, darn! I found your blog a month too late. Last month I finally admitted that I would not use all those little remains of sock yarn, and I gave it away.

Would have gladly sent to you. Nice blog.. I’m enjoying reading it.

Lucky you, all the responses you got! I use my leftover sock yarn to add to worstened weight yarn for CIC knitting – childrenincommon.org. So if you DO end up with more leftovers — please consider donating them to someone who will use it for charity. Not that the blankie doesn’t rock, mind you, because it does. Just sharing another thought!!
