I know I'm late, but what a fun post. I am aware of all the annoying parts of winter in MN, I just find that right now I would rather be there than in Chicago. And then I remember that for the most part, I like Chicago.

Come January, maybe you can take a picture of the odd slanty sun that can get underneath your sunglasses at 2 in the afternoon. Or maybe a picture of 7:15am when its still dark.

Very interesting post. My husband is (half-) Vietnamese (and I am not) and the Asian stores here are a similar experience for me.

We have friends who the wife is Asian and the husband is a red-head and one of theire boys looks like the dad and the other looks like the mom.

If you want me to look in the Vietnamese stores here for the pho bowls, let me know (and give me a description, but I think I have a guess.)

I know what it feels to be the "other" too - I grew up in Japan for 11 years and my family was the only white family in the city. We actually doubled the "foreign" citizens in the city when we moved there. Anyway, I love going to the Asian markets because there's always something that reminds me of being a kid.

I really haven't tried many of the Asian markets in the Twin Cities area but I really like United Noodles (near the intersection of Hwy 94 & Cedar Ave). They seem to have a very large amount of Japanese food but also lots of other things that I have no clue about. They also have some gifts and dishes so you might be able to find the soup bowls you're looking for - just know that the gift prices might be a little expensive... I don't get to go there very often but I eat a lot of rice and I'm partial to Japanese rice. I can totally relate to Joe wanting rice with his meal :)

Hi Shelly! I love 'Ghom Tang' which is oxtail soup in Korean. It is one of the things I can make that my mom and dad say I make just like my mom! I attempt to make galbi and bulgogi but it still doesn't compare to my mom's. One of the pluses of living in Chicago is that there are tons of Asian markets--the next time you and Joe are in Chicago, let me know and I will take to H-Mart, the newest large Korean market in Chi-town. Not only can you find all the ingredients you never thought you would need, but you would find the bowls you wanted too. AND they have a food court, too! Come on down to visit!

Agree totally with the thoughts on being the 'other' I lived in Asia for a year and it was (initially) quite a shock to be the minority. We had excellent Asian stores in Australia and my husband and I (both caucasian) used to shop there regularly. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Your oxtail soup had my mouth watering.

Shelly, I never knew oxtail soup was a cow's tail! And what is a Tduck then?

Thanks for the advise. I'm going to take it. LYS does have help-times so I'll keep you posted. I'm also knitting preemie caps for the local hospital..that's fun too.

My heart goes out to you with Sophie's sleeping situation. When we're in the middle of this stuff it feels like it will never end, no matter how many times we've dealt with it. It's wonderful that you can blog about it and we can reassure you "this too shall pass" 'cuz it will!!

You never mention your parents or sibs. Do they live far away?

Reminds me of growing up in Northern California. Lots of asian americans in Silicon valley. Anyway, I went into an asian market once and although, my very white husband and hispanic self felt completely out of place, everyone was nice and helped us to find the peanut butter rice and sesame balls that we were desperately looking for.

That soup sounds wonderful. mmmmmm

Amy, if you're serious and have a recipe for which you want to shop, I might be willing to go with you. I don't think I would be comfortable going just to oogle, but if you want help finding ingredients and looking around as inconspicuously as possible while there, we might be able to work something out. E-mail me at shellyk at shellykang dot com if you want.
