Clotheshorse?
So there's this wedding coming up next month. The one for which I just bought Julie that expensive but very cute flower girl dress. As a stay-at-home mom, I don't wear all that many fancy clothes - I tend to stick mostly to blue jeans, chinos and t-shirts. All of my clothes from before the girls are too small, and I really want to look as much like a put-together grown-up at this family event as possible. Especially considering the giant fashion blunder I made the last time the whole Kang family got together. But let's not go there.
I'm not the best shopper in the world. I don't absolutely love trying on clothes, and even when I was twenty pounds lighter and in great shape, I didn't love looking at my body in the mirror. Still, the shopping had to be done, and I wanted some good honest advice along the way. I begged my friend Jen to come along to the mall with me, and along she came, gladly enough. We were both excited to have a morning away from our beloved families.
After a stop at the coffee shop, we got down to work. Warning! Pictures of me and my deathly purple-white skin to follow. I promise - I will be using some kind of tanning product before wearing any of these things in public!
We started at J.Jill, and I think I tried on about fifty million items of clothing there - everything from pants to skirts to tunics to blouses and god knows what else. The sales lady even made me try on a necklace! She was really very nice. The only thing that even came close there was this linen dress with embroidered flowers:

And I think it's really funny that this dress is one that I had been looking at last week when I had the kids with me and no time to try it on, and then Jen e-mailed a picture of it to me as an idea when I suggested that I needed to go shopping. She and I have very similar taste, only hers is a more refined version of the same. I'm just too lazy when I shop, I guess.
There were a few other stores and trips into dressing rooms in between, but we ended up finding final candidates at only one other store - Von Maur, which is a nice department store here.
All three of these are V-necks because I needed something with nursing access. I tried on some skirt/top combinations and some pants/top combinations as well, but none of them both flattered my current egg-shaped figure and qualified as dressy enough.

By the time we got to the end, I was feeling a little punch drunk and was making silly faces for the camera:

Jen apparently felt the same way - she had the camera out in the hall while I was changing back into my normal clothes, and produced these very funny shots.

That's the new hat she got while we were out. She was just trying some on to amuse herself while I was picking up a package of - well, maybe the whole Internet doesn't need to know exactly what else I was buying today, but it was something to help control that egg-shaped figure. Anyway, she had this little green number on, and it was very cute and I had my credit card out any way, and it wasn't very expensive. I mean, just think if I had hired a personal shopper for four hours! This was a tiny fraction of what that would have cost, and way more fun.
Finally, we settled on a dress. Can you guess which one?
I came home, ready to see what my family had been up to all day. Julie was having a little snack.

Sophie was ready to play a little game of behind-the-back peek-a-boo while I folded some diapers. She would peek out from behind one of my shoulders and give me a big wide-mouth toothy kiss, then cruise around my back and do the same on the other side. Over and over for ten minutes full of giggles and grins.

Off to go crank out some more blankie squares!

You keep apologizing for and complaining about your "deathly pale skin" which is actually very attractive. C'mon, Shelly! Your skin tone is fantastic, and you don't *need* color to be attractive. When you say "OH, it's so ugly when I'm pale!", everyone around you believes that. But when you smile and say "I stay out of the sun to preserve my skin.", everyone believes you look like a goddess.
I know pictures make you paler than in real life, but you look so good in all these dresses. You don't look like a monster or a pale horrible blob! Your skin shines and your coloring (hair, lips, cheeks) makes you look healthy and downright sexy. Be proud of the care you are inadvertently putting into your skin! It's beautiful on you!
I saw you and your beautiful blanket at the St. Paul worship of the Yarn Harlot. It was a wonderful evening. I was most impressed with your leftover sock yarn blanket. Gorgeous!! I also am making a left over sock yarn blanket, using a different method for making squares. However, your blanket is much more beautiful. I have tried to accumulate left over sock yarn (since my sock production cannot keep up with the blanket's need for squares. If you have any left over left over sock yarn, I would love to purchase some from you.
If you'd like to see my blanket, go to this post, and scroll down to near the end of the post.

Have fun finishing your blankie1
Love you in the jjill number.
I love the first dress, hate the second, and could tolerate the third. So now I have to hold my breath and see what you chose.
The blanket? I love it! Just gorgeous . Will have to see how it evolves to its spectabular conclution!
Embrace the pale! I'm with Suzanne - you look great.
I hope you chose dress #1! It's very spring-wedding-y.
I think both dresses 1 and 3 are lovely, as are you. I WISH I had such a figure!
Thanks for such a detailed post about the Harlot event. Love the picture with the two of you holding your blankie!!!
I love the first dress, can do without the second, and can live with the third! Which seems to be the consensus. And Now I am feeling QUITE nosy about your last fashion "faux pas"?! I would think that unless there was a large hole in something, it should not be that big of a deal. But hey, that is me, no fashion queen.
The first dress is lovely, but looks a little frumpy on you. I'm not a fan of the second dress, but you look sexy in the third! ;) (Perhaps it's just the way you're posing in the first and third.) I definitely wouldn't use any self-tanning stuff... you look wonderful the way you are!
I keep feeling like there was something else I was going to say, but I can't think of what it was.
I think I'm at 96 blankie squares now. :)
I think #3 is gorgeous on you, I don't see the egg shape but can accept that you see it, I see things about myself nobody else notices too.
How funny - I must be the only person who liked Dress #2 the best! But you look cute in all 3.
Beautiful blanket!!
I like dress #2, as well! It makes your figure look fabulous! I think #1 is a gorgeous dress, but it looks a little too big in the bodice and the sleeves. Dresses 2 and 3 look great and flatter your figure. I like the pattern of dress 3 best, but I like the sleeves and the surplice bodice better on dress 2. It's hard to compare those two, since you're standing at different angles - that's probably why people don't like dress #2 as much. All clothes and figures look better at a sllight angle than they do head on.
They will all look lovely for a wedding, though! And I think your pale skin is gorgeous!
Your sock blanket is beautiful! Do you still need more sock yarn?
Hi! This is the first time to visit your blog. Those pictures of your blanket are beautiful! I am very impressed at the composition of the colors and everything! I don't think that there is much else that I have seen that would make me feel as awe-inspired. I love to knit socks, alas, I don't think that I would have as much left-overs as you have gathered. Also, I vote on dress number three, but that is just my taste, feel free to ignore it. Thank you for sharing!
Your sockie blanket is beautiful.
I'll put a vote in for dress #3!
:-)
Your blanket is coming along very nicely! Also, the closeup pic that the Yarn Harlot has of it is very nice. As far as dresses... I think dresss #3 is very flattering on you.
Shelly,
I think dress #2 is the winner. I don't care what anyone else says. But I think each of those dresses look nice on you, so which ever one you picked is the winner!
And Miss Loopy Ewe commented on your blog asking if you need more sock yarn? Holy shnikeys, when she asks..the answer is always yes! ;)
Congrats on all the publicity you are getting on the blanket, it is a showstopper and I know it is going to be an heirloom for your family.
Oh, and as far as the state fair gos? I totally believe you can do it.
Dress #3 all the way. I'll be a lady (yes, I can be, shut up) and not give my opinion on the first two, just in case you chose one of those instead.
Definitely dress #3! Your sock blankie is beautiful. I'm new to your blog and look forward to following its progress. Congrats!
I agree, dress #3 is the best! I like #1, but it seems to wrinkle easily (not good), and I like #2, but you look sexy in #3!
It's been a while since I breast-fed, but if it were me I'd avoid dress #1 because of its solid color, and go with #3. I was always, um, productive when I nursed my kids and I would have needed the camoflage.
All the dresses look great on you though, and you are NOT too pale! Along with all the other commenters, I think your hair and skin look great. If you want just a little boost, though, my daughter got one of those lotions with a little self-tanner in them at Target a couple of weeks ago, and it looks pretty good. Not so much that she looks orange, but enough that she's just a little bit tanner. Since she's 12, I put my foot down about the stronger stuff, and honestly I didn't think the Target brand lotion would make much difference, but she's happy, so I'm happy! ;-)
I'm with the others in that I think your skin is beautiful as it is, and I, for one, don't worry about being pale. It's so much better for us than being tan, and I think that even here in CA, more and more people are seeing the benefit of not damaging our skin in the name of that "healthy" glow.
Hmm, I was also in favor of dress #2 and wondered why so many others don't like it. It does the "accentuate your smallest area" bit at the waist, and the V neck is very flattering. #3 is my second favorite. #1 looks a bit baggy on top. Besides, as a fellow mom I avoid linen since it wrinkles so badly and would likely look rumpled by the time you arrived at the wedding, just from the car trip there. The previous commenter has a good point about the camouflaging nature of prints vs. solids, too.
I have some LL leftovers for you. I was waiting to build up more than one length, but maybe I'll send it before I lose it. I'll make sure I don't have any others lying around, and mail it off.
My half-asian kids also have allergies, sigh. I only hope they'll be outgrown.
Anyways, I have found a GREAT blog with cool recipes for allergic families: http://www.ourgaggleofgirls.com/recipes/
Think I'll be trying the lemon chicken soup tonight.
when did j.jill start selling maternity clothes?
i'm going against consensus...
i love the second dress. a lot.
the first is okay - as much as i love linen, i have a really hard time with how wrinkly it becomes so easily!
but the third is also nice.
i think it's a great trio of finalists.
but, it's true. the second is my favorite :)
