Saturday Stuff

Beowulf was fun. It wasn’t a great movie, but the 3-D part was pretty cool. It reminded me a lot of looking at the Viewmaster slides, only oh-so-bigger and better. And it was fun to be out and about, free of responsibility for a few hours with my husband. Not to mention the popcorn.

I’m loving the suggestions on the Christmas list so far. Some of them are totally off-base, but there are at least as many pretty good recommendations. Keep ‘em coming!

My new coat came in the mail yesterday. I opened it up and tried it on, and I was more than a little disappointed with it. It was too big, and the fabric was less than appealing, and it just didn’t look good on me. So I took it back to the local store, no problem. But now I need to find another coat to buy. I’ve looked all over the Internet and haven’t found anything that just screams “Buy me, I’m the one!” Right now I’m down to two contenders that are close maybes.

I like the crisp lines of this one at J Crew. I like that it has Thinsulate lining for warmth in Minnesota weather. I like the length. The price is a little high – the price is kind of a lot high. And I really wish they had it in an olive green color kind of like the coat I’ve been wearing for the last seven years. The brown color might not be too bad, though.

This one over at Eddie Bauer is a lot more affordable, and in fact is the one I was thisclose to buying earlier in the week. It doesn’t come in green, either, but the merlot isn’t bad. Joe says it’s okay if I buy whichever one I want, especially if I think I’ll wear it for as long as the current one. What do you all think?

I need to go get a little knitting done before bed…

The Eddie Bauer website only shows what is in-stock in the catalog warehouse. You should go to Southdale (the only mall with both stores, according to the websites) and try them both on, and see which one you like better. While you are there, if you still have the energy/time, hit the coat sections of Macy’s and Penneys and see if they have something you like. If there is nothing in your price range that you like right now, and your current coat is still doing the job, take a look in January or February when they are all on sale to make room for swimsuits and the fancier and nicer coats are in your range, or perhaps a coat you didn’t like at $300 is more appealing at $85 or $115.

I don’t know if you need the coat right away, but like katy suggested, you can wait until February or so when things go on sale. I bought my winter coat from J. Crew (very similar to the one you linked to, although sans Thinsulate) in February or March of this past year and it was seriously discounted. I can’t remember how much, but I know it was a steal. So if you don’t mind waiting, you could get a great bargain, from J. Crew or elsewhere.

And, just so you know, if you go to a J. Crew store and order something from the phone in the store, they won’t charge you for the shipping. It’s nice to save a few bucks when you can!

    Gap has this one: http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=6951&pid=522660

But it may not be warm enough.

have you looked at overstock.com or newport news? Both can have really nice things and really good deals!

Lands End has a few like that and one comes in a dark sage-y green. Good luck on your search for a great coat.

The classy wool coat is the nicest.
If you want it go ahead and get it.
The weather is already cold and if you wait your size or color may not be there when they go on sale.
The merlot color would look good on you too. You could be enjoying it for a longer period this year.:)
Besides the price isn’t too bad for a nice wool coat. Tammy

Well, since you wear your coats for several years, I’d go with the one from J. Crew. It is beautiful. I read about your contest, and I think that getting something just for you is a good gift. I like the idea of an IOU for time away just for you. We could spend the day going to yarn stores and then eat our way through the MN State Fair again:)

I was in your boat a year or so ago. I got a coat at Costco and wore it to death. I really needed a new one last year but could not find “the” coat. This year I thought is the year but could not find “the” coat…until I was in Macy’s. I saw it. I wanted a black kind of nice coat because I was keeping my icky red one for work (I work in a playground at school). I looked a the price tage of $200 and thought nope too much. As I was leaving I rememberd the 50% off sale so I went back. I had a $50 git card and thought that is great I can do this and if I charged it I got some more off. I ended up paying $37 for a $200 coat!! I would take Katy’s advice and check out Macy’s! They are having some great sales and if you don’t find anything wait till after Christmas. Good luck hope you find what you like!!!

I like the Eddie Bauer one. But to be truthful I don’t like coats! I live in Maryland, so unless I am going on a long walk, or it is really cold, I do not need one for door to car… just a heavy jacket.

Check around for an Eddie Bauer Catalog. There was a coupon good for 20% your whole order the whole month of November. I’d give you my coupon…except I used it. I say go with the Merlot color. Or wait till you find the perfect coat and color you like!

I like the “crispness” of the J Crew coat but I guess that goes along with, “You get what you pay for”. I ordered a similar coat from Chadwicks and had the same problem, way too big. I haven’t had a new coat for 9 yrs!! Good luck shopping.

I just bought a new one in the spring, on sale at an outlet store – the only way to go.

The Eddie Bauer one is okay but the J.Crew one is much nicer. I like it in Navy… and in bright green if I were actually bold enough to buy a coat in that colour. But I’m not. :)
