In Which I Feel Like a Jackass
So late last night I posted about that wonderful "deal" on some makeup. I'm getting ready to go delete that post because I don't want anyone else to get suckered like I did.
It's so funny - I sat there last night thinking "This is to good to be true." But I read about it on a forum I've read for a very long time, and the person who posted it was someone I would have expected to check things out before she bit into it. And, like most suckers, I wanted it to be true. And the website involved does look pretty slick and professional, but still.
I actually thought to myself - I should run this through Snopes before buying anything. Well, thanks to an astute commenter, I know now that I should have followed my instincts. Here's the thread on the subject that I found at Snopes. D'oh!
The good news is that it does seem to be a legitimate business, and I might even expect to get a package in the mail sometime soon. The bad news is that this is not a high-end brand of cosmetics, and it is not affiliated with Nordstroms, or Bloomingdales, which apparently is another version of the rumor.
So now I'm feeling a bit foolish. But the knitting-related thing about this that I found funny is that the first person who responded to the thread had this as her tagline:
"Skepticism, my dear great-grandchildren, is a fine thing, and to be cultivated. Take as little on trust as you possibly can. You have quite good brains ... and you might as well practice using them." -Elizabeth Zimmermann
So appropriate!
Sorry for any inconvenience I may have caused my readers, and I'll come back with some knitting content hopefully this evening.

Several friends of mine have ordered from ELF recently, and have been very pleased with their purchases. Don't feel like a jackass.
I read your blog late last night, and almost clicked over to buy, but I didn't because I really don't wear make-up and I probably would have purchased just because it was a good deal. I hope you have a good weekend. Love the sunrise jacket! You are such a fast knitter! We're off to Milwaukee this weekend, so lots of knitting time in the car and at two baseball games!
I've ordered a few things from them, and I like the makeup, so don't feel bad about posting.
The eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara were good. The foundation was okay, but in a pretty small tube. It was handy to carry in a purse for touch-ups though. Their makeup bags are pretty nice -- lots of little pockets inside.
Hm... maybe I'll head over and order a couple of things!
Silly me! I placed an order this morning after reading your post. But I feel better now seeing the other commenters. I mostly ordered brushes though, which like you said - can be quite pricey so no big loss if they end up being kind of crappy! And even if one item turns out great, it'll be worth the order!
ELF is decent - it isn't high end but I would put it at about drug store (and I am not one to look down on drugstore!). They're perfect for throwing in your purse.
Oh geez, I figured because it came from you it was alright too. I ordered at about 3 am this morning. Yes, I thought it was a really good deal, but.... I did it anyways. I guess I shall too see if I get anything...
ah well, such is life! I ordered a few things too, so we shall see how they are!
I've ordered stuff from them in the past. Definitely not high end, but it is a decent drug store make-up. I didn't like the foundation or powder. I still use some of the eyeshadows. You shouldn't feel like a jackass. So, they aren't affiliated with a department store, but it is a real store with cheap make-up.
You might still like the products for the actual product and not because of the label. I hope that will be the case. Please send a follow up post when your package actually arrives. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be OK with your purchase in the end.
Eh, we who among us has never made a mistake?
It's all OK.
Don't worry...
It is a legit business, and I found the shipping fast and the makeup does what it is supposed to do. It has also been tested in several girl mags--Cosmo, Allure, etc. The brushes do shed a bit at first.
Don't feel like a jackass--it's real, it's just not affiliated with Nordstum.
I've used their stuff before and have been really happy with it. I'm glad you posted it! It reminded me to check them out again!
I have heard of ELF! I think from what I remember hearing it's a cosmetic company started by a guy who couldn't believe how much his wife's makeup cost. I could be wrong, however I'm pretty sure it's a legit company so you're not stupid/foolish/a jackass:)
Now don't beat yourself up about it ... not a big deal ...
While ELF isn't a high end brand, it is actually pretty good makeup so don't feel bad. I think you will be please with it anyway and you did achieve your goal of moving out of your makeup comfort zone without having to drop a ton of cash.
