Spin Vid

This is a little embarrassing. What I'm about to share with y'all. Doug wanted to see the spinning wheel in action, so I decided to put together a little video showing how it works. Only, it's me doing the showing - me a beginning spinner who can hardly remember the names for all the parts. Me, with the high-pitched nasally voice and the fat gut displayed prominently at the side of the screen. And it's not exactly high entertainment. In fact, I bored Joe practically to tears in the five minutes it took for me to record the video. But anyway, in case anyone is interested...

See? I told you.

I have lots of other pictures and stuff to share, but am honestly still too mesmerized by the wheel to give up my free time to decent blogging. I will say that I am in love with the yarn that I'm making right now. It's crazy-soft merino, in subtle heathers of mostly blue with some green, yellow, and pink flecked in. I bought twelve ounces of this wool, and have finished spinning about two thirds of it as of very late last night. I have two huge squishy skeins that I just can't stop cuddling. It's a two-ply somewhere around sport-weight, and so far I have about a thousand yards of it. I'm meditating on what it might become knit up, and thinking I might be able to stretch the finished yardage into a lacy sweater for myself. I've been wanting to knit up a lacy sweater. We'll see.

Totally fascinating. Thanks for the video. And I loved the disinterested cat.

LOVE the video! I have so enjoyed seeing you go from beginning spindle, to Golding, to wheel... Thanks for sharing the journey with all of us!

That was so cool. You're not boring, and you didn't sound nasally at all. I can totally see why you don't have time to blog. Thanks for taking the time to make the video for us. I was mesmerized by the sound of the wheel. But, stop it please. I have way too many knitting projects in my queue to start spinning. I don't want to start spinning, I don't. Help.

That was really interesting, and you have a lovely voice (although I think we all hate our voices when we hear them recorded).

Thanks for making such a great video and explaining how it all works, I've never really seen beyond roving in, yarn out but I can see how this is very soothing - I think spinning is now upgraded to a 'when' rather than an 'if' for me!

That was mesmerizing! Thanks for posting it. The mechanics of spinning make a lot more sense to me now.

I thought you did a good job, and sound and look fine! And I loved how the kitty was watching from the corner of the bed!

Thank you for sharing this video. You are helping feed the desire I have to spin. You do make it look very easy to do.

Hey - that was great! I had my spinning desire awakened again yesterday when talking to someone at my SnB group and after seeing your video I REALLY want to have a go!

And you sound fine! :)

I'm getting so tempted to try spinning! Did you start with a spindle?

I have disinterested cat jealousy! Before I'd even NOTICED kitty I thought, "wow, she's had to have locked the cats out...that would never work with a cat in the ro..what's that on the bed?!"
;)

Great job! Can't wait to see a closeup of the finished yarn. Love the unimpressed cat.

Wow. Posts on demand?! Bow to me, your new blog master and editor, haha!

Nah, just kidding. Thanks for the effort, guys. If only I were allowed to take any cameras into work I could show you how the titanium needles were made!

Is it possible to "coast," or do you have to treadle constantly to keep the wheel spinning? Some good bearings and a heavier, flywheel-like circumference on the wheel could probably save you a lot of effort.

Obviously, though, if you were into saving effort you'd just buy yarn off the shelf, right? :)

That was really interesting - thanks so much for making and sharing that video!

and like others, I was delighted by the feline audience. I actually watched the beginning twice because I thought I had missed the part where the cat switched sides :)

I'm so grateful for your video. I've been flirting with the idea of spinning. I saw your Sock Yarn Blanket on Ravelry and followed the link to here. Love the blog! Thank you and the hubby (those boys can be such good sports!) for this. It makes the idea of spinning so much more tangible and down to earth. Odd these days that doing things for yourself can seem so out of reach... Thank you again!
